Kim: I was always artistic and creative. I was lucky as a child to be in the gifted and talented program and through this I learned the importance of nurturing your creative and artistic side as well as your educational side.
A: You’re clearly a creative talent, and it shows in the items you make. Where do you find inspiration for your projects?
K: Most of my inspiration comes from nature. I have a minor in geology and the beauty of the natural world inspires me constantly. I also have a minor in photography which lends itself well to seeing the beauty in something and capturing it. For some of my projects inspiration can come from a shoe or even fabric trim.
A: What was your favorite creation that you made?
K: That’s a hard one, I’ve made so many. I think my favorite is a vase I made in a 3 –part project while taking a ceramics class. The inspiration was an artichoke and I was blown away by my own work at the end.
A: I admire this cake every time I enter the Belladeux offices. What a great idea you had! Where do you start when you take on a project you’ve never tackled before.
K:I am the Queen of Google. If I like something I want to know how it’s made so I start searching on the internet for “How-To” examples and images. If I can’t find directions I make something up and cross my fingers it works. I like to look at examples of other artwork to use in non-traditional ways. For example, I don’t use actual cake supplies to make my fake cakes. You will more than likely find me at a home improvement store and a fabric store for supplies rather than at a cake supply place.
A: This mask is exquisite. How do you envision your creations before they become a reality?
K: Sometimes I sketch out what I want to do before I do it, which is what I did for this mask. Other times I just take one piece at a time and see where it leads me. For the mask I had never worked with leather before so I spent a lot of time researching the best tools and paints for leather. Once I landed on a color scheme I started slowly adding bling to make it stand out. I love false eyelashes but hate wearing them so I took a chance with the method I used for creating the lashes on the mask.
A: As a member of the Krewe of Muses, you’ve made many of the best Muses shoes I’ve seen. How many have you made?
K: I’ve made over 100 shoes in the last few years.
A: Which has been your favorite?
K: My grapes shoe is my favorite. It’s actually the only shoe I have ever kept for myself.
A: Your creativity makes Belladeux stand out among event designers. How do you bring your creativity to the events Belladeux produces?
K: I use the same methods for creating events that I use for all projects. I start with a piece of inspiration, whether that is a flower , a linen, or even a cake. Then I build from there. I have always felt that an event should feel like you stepped into another world and I work very hard to transform a venue into something different and magical. Growing up in such a creative city has shown me that everything is better with glitz and glamour.
Wow! I may be working on 4 hours of sleep right now but I’m pretty sure it’s Kim’s creativity and not my delirium that’s got me so pumped right now! It is great working for someone that takes pride in all of her events and has instilled that quality in the Belladeux Team. Where do you find inspiration? What’s your key to being creative?
